Rand, as you said earlier, you get what you pay for, so Conny probably pays around 15$ for his, give or take. But, I am currently on campus and cannot take th test till Friday, So I will post it then.

Exactly. And it looks like I'm paying for crap if our cost differences make our uploads the same still. The download is hugely different, but come on. I may ahve to make a call soon.

Our uploads were really close, Stine. That's so embarrassing. How can any cable have an upload speed as slow as dial-up? Actually dial-up upload speeds are under 1 kb/s, rather than the 300ish Stine got. It is so horrible the speedtest.net actually flips out and thinks it is better than it really is. I think my dialup got an upload score closer to Jumin's. Edit: While we are on the topic of internets. Suddenlink. How does their internet work? Does it use a satellite? I found out I -might- be able to get Suddenlink at my house, and my school uses it and it seems pretty reliable, but I know with all the trees around my house satellite anything doesn't work too good. (Unless we take it out to the lake, but we can't lay cement or anything underwater to hold it in place as things stand.) If it is straight out a cable with no signal or anything involved, I am most certainly going to check out this possibility.

Oh wow. So that is why my computer downloads and uploads EXTREMELY slow compared to my friends (I'm talking hours-days to do something while it takes them minutes-hours). How much do you guys pay? My parents spend about 40 a month on it. Now in relation to the topic, I see Joker has a godly down speed and Lenk has an absurd up speed. Now combine them together to create the super server!

Still.. Why is my D/L so much lower then yours and his? A large number of things. You'd have to factor in god knows everything concerning your location, your set up, your computer, your modem, your cables, your local provider's location (as in where they are sending out the shit to you) and a lot of stuff. I don't know if it is true for any other connections, but for dial-up having a phone line that is longer than 7 feet hinders the connection.

Ah. Ok yeah that does make sense. That's kinda odd for the connection for Dial up to change with the length of cable.

Dialup runs off a regular phone cable that goes from the pc/modem to the wall. That line is flat and smooth. It does not insulate itself well to prevent outside interferrence, as well as the signal is more easily dispersed.
DSL/Cable modems deliver the signal in a specific manner that resists signal degradation untill it hits the modem which translates the signal into a more understandable signal for the PC to handle.
Ethernet cable is round and if you look closely you'll see spirals of the inner wiring, which is used for DSL/Cable/Highspeed connections.Ethernet's other designation is RJ-45, which represents the number of complete spirals the inner wiring makes within a set distance, I think it's 1 foot of wiring. The spiraling /coil effect helps the signal integrity by resisting outside interference and also enhances it somehow(i forget exactly) so distance does not effect it.
I have a 30 ft. ethernet cable running through the basement and up to the other end of the house for mom and dad's PC, and their speed is barely reduced, it's maybe 85-90% full speed. Cable is a more optimum choice for high speed internet, because if you notice just by looking, a co-ax cable is much thicker and has a large single wire in the middle. It resists interference to help maintain higher bandwidths at longer distances, so they can guaruntee higher speeds to customers. DSL speed generally varies by the distance from the box to your house, because those old phone lines up on the poles are just like your dial-up lines, flat and smooth with no spiral like the RJ-45 ethernet stuff.
Congratulations you have graduated basic tech for troubleshooting internet issues for a cable company. ;lol

Then tell me this Fen, I use 2 computers, the computer I will use for hosting is a Desktop, if I get the job, but what I mainly use is my laptop, now they have the same exact download speeds, but why does my laptop upload own my desktops upload speed by about 3k?(I know why I just want to see if Josh is as smart as he seems )

I don't see how your upload can be different on your laptop than your desktop if you're using the same connection for both.. Especially by 3k.

Jax, they are not the same connection, remember when my computer had to be fixed, something to do with that CD downgraded it, It was the same as my lap top with the 5k upload, but what ever we did for some reason messed my deesktops speed up. And Mike, holy fucking shit man, your school owns.

Then try my server in about 1 - 1,5 hours. I was hosting a V4 server, though, this morning, I accidentally turned off my computer right before I went to work. Ahh, well. It'll be up in about 1 - 1,5 hours! Try my connection ^^
