So I'm going to say that I am slightly scared about this whole new hosting thing. I haven't really been around Bolt lately, but unfortunately he does have a history of lack of responsibility. That being said, I do not know how he is now. From his experience as a player, I like Bolt being the host because he realizes how much this game means to all of us that have worked so hard on our characters. I can assist whoever is the host in setting up Remote Administration. If I had a trustworthy internet connection I would offer my server. (Yes, an actual server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4, already has remote admin set up etc.) (And by the way, most providing servers (DNS, RADIUS, Web, Mail) are STILL Win2000 because providers are afraid of change. That's how I got the OS, so don't let the year scare you.) Anyways, I would offer my actual dedicated server to the cause, but I don't have my own Internet connection at this moment in time. If the opportunity presents itself in the future I would offer again.
Back to what I was originally saying. I know that everyone here feels the same way, but I'm kind of surprised at the lack of people actually saying it. I would hope everyone is petrified of change to an extent. Not enough for us to not overcome it, but enough for us to realize the things that could go wrong. Not to insult Bolt, but he brags of ridiculous exploits (some true, some potentially not) that make me kind of scared of him being the host, and entrusting him with this games livelihood and longevity. Same for Joker, who until recently was going to quit the game, but ended up staying around.
Not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic. I'm tempted to ask for a copy of my own save file because I know that I wouldn't let anything happen to it. Maybe I just have trust issues, but when it comes to something I've (we've) put years into, the thought of losing it all is rather scary.
I'd much rather build another server, and ship it to Jumz and make him host it. Because of the players still playing, only a few I would trust with my save file. And those would be anyone who is over level 60, because they are just as afraid as I am of losing their Characters.
Bolt, Joker, No hard feelings, I like you both as players. Obviously. I do talk to you both when you're in game, correct? I just find it difficult to trust people I haven't known as long or as well as other suitors.

There are no hard feelings, and I didnt think I was going to be around for this. But they called and said they didnt need me over there, so I am back and I would be able to host 24/7, If I get it I would update save files Once or twice a weak on my flash drive to make sure no one loses any data. I just hope Kija decides the new host soon. till then I am hosting a V4 server, hope to see you on it.

Meh I haven't really shown I'm responsible thats true enough, but I've been responsible enough to keep myself alive right? Either way I wouldn't midn any decision made. Its what they decide upon and thats what'll happen.

honestly though... what are the system reqs to host a BYOND game...? Isn't the deal breaker here just whoever has the fastest internet connection?

honestly though... what are the system reqs to host a BYOND game...? Isn't the deal breaker here just whoever has the fastest internet connection? It's certainly a huge factor, but not the only one. I, for one, wouldn't vote for somebody who's gonna be an ass and refuse to host if he's not immediately given robes, or somebody who's got a decent connection but frequently takes down the server for unrelated things, like the previously mentioned WoW raiding that Kija mentioned. Fast, reliable, consistent. That's what I'd be voting for. I don't give a shit how fast the server is, if it's not up half the time.

That is only part of it, every member of the Bh must vote yes to the host, robes or not. And Kija looks at different stuff other then just the connection, It is not just about picking some random person that applies on the forums with the fastest connection. Kija is still deciding, so give him his time and he'll tell you the requirements in due time.

hmm.. i should have reworded it..
assuming all applicants are able to host 24/7 and are trustworthy, wouldn't the deal breaker just be the speed of the connection? cause BYOND doesn't seem to all the CPU intensive..
ofcourse we aren't gonna pick someone we don't trust or know.

I wouldnt mind being the host, but I would rather choose not because of my damn connection being disconnected every now and then. Other then that, my connection is pretty fast. I can't give in the sppedtest because I am not at my house in New Jersey. I am at my friends house in Massachusetts, in the Cape Cod area, so I'm on his laptop till Sunday when we go back home. Like i stated before, my connection is good, I am trustworthy, and I would like to be thought as responsible. As for that I could be a pretty good host.
[glow=red,2,300]The Downsides[/glow]
My connection only has one problem that I know of. It disconnects oftenly. That would mean that it would shutdown a lot. Also for those savefile things, I wouldnt want to even have one of those in my house because my house is a damned circus. I wouldnt want to risk it. Also I can't host 24/7 because of school and those things. When I'm not home everything is unplugged for some reason I do not know. On the weekends I am home alot and either way I always leave the Computer on when I leave. Weekends would definitly be a good time for me. But I'm just not up for it. I've been around for a long ass time, so most of the players know me. I have the highest level of my class (59 Redmage) and I sure as hell wouldn't want to lose it, so most of the 60+'s know I wouldn't think of losing them either. To wrap all my non-needed speech, I would be a pretty good host. I'm just not up to it. And to be honest, I dont think I'm ready for the robes.

Jumin, having a good connection and being able to host 24/7 are two key factors, They look for more then just those two things. if you wait Im sure Kija will let us no.

This may not be the place to ask, but until we DO figure out a solution to the hosting mess...THG Chat Room anybody?

Mahn's internet connection will be coming back in around seven days. The server will be back up then as well with Mahn being the host until a full solution is decided on.

I think that is a good move at this moment in time Kija, and I would like to thank Mahn for being generous enough to still think of us will he is moving.
As far as computer requirements, Processing power is not all that is necessary, especially for a BYOND Game. As far as I know, BYOND playing/hosting is not CPU intensive given the limited amount of actual processing necessary. I would assume that RAM needs to be over 512k to run efficiently. Less RAM Would be fine for a dedicated server, but 512k RAM can easily be used by a persons regular online habits, let alone adding hosting to that list. For the game to run quietly in the background RAM above 512k would most likely cut it. And, RAM upgrades are VERY easy, and rather cheap online if it came too needing to upgrade someones system.
We don't want to intrude on the host's personal activities online. I think that is where the community and Mahn had a few problems. Mahn/Any host should be able to enjoy doing anything online that they want to do, BUT, that host also has to realize that by being the host they can't sacrifice the game/responsibilities for other activities. Needs to be the right amount of give/take.
Jumz, what are your system specs? I can help you find that information if you don't know how to.

i can't host. I use a laptop which i use for school I could, if I lived at home. We actually have 2 internet connections and a spare computer that only my mom uses.. but she always does things on it and isn't computer savvy.. so it would most likely be shut down.. a lot.

That means my download is crap. I must have the barebones minimum for a cable user. Then again, I pay about 1/10th what Joker pays, for example. You get whatcha pay for.

www.speedtest.net/mini.phpThat would actually make the server hosting FFTHG into a speedtest server. That way we can run speedtests to the server we'll actually be playing a game on, as opposed to running them to provider servers throughout the U.S.A. Definitely something to look into. If anyone is confused, feel free to ask.

That confuses me, is it like it's own server hosted by Speedtest.net?

It would turn your computer into a mini speedtest server. Just like you clicked on the pyramid in Greensboro, NC. Your computer would be a new pyramid.
Very interesting point Thorny, if the computer running the server would do this people would be able to see exactly how well they are connected to the server without .ping.
Great idea, as long as it doesn't cause lag.
Sidenote for Milenko: You have very good results, but if you tried a server closer than ~300 mi, they would probably be better. Unless that was the gold pyramid then it's the closest one.
[edit] I've added speedtest.net results for the free dial-up at my fiance's mother's house. Maybe I should host, huh guys? [/edit]

Our uploads were really close, Stine. That's so embarrassing. How can any cable have an upload speed as slow as dial-up?
