So it's only version 4 we can get?
I wasn't around that early so I don't know what's what when I play it
Can anyone help me with what's in and what isn't?
I'd like to have a later version if I could though

FFTHG version 4 is the only one thats available for download.
I can try to tell you the differences in both versions, provided that I remember them.
Version 4 - This version is playable all the way to Ranook Graveyard. - Skyre is Skure here. - Southern Skure is mapped all the way to Anara, but is not accessible. - The Danian Tavern is non-existent at this point. It doesn't serve that much use, though. - The bosses here are "normal" bosses in that they only have one round and a hp amount. Vallatio has no clones here, nor does Kaug have to be pushed to kill him. - In every battle, all of the large monsters are in the back and the small ones are in the front. The formation is usually random though, not usually the same. - The monsters here are not numbered in the battle field. So when you choose to attack number one on the list, you don't know which monster you'll be attacking unless its a different type and/or theres only one kind of that monster. - Everyone in the party must select their action in a designated order, starting with the person with the highest agility. - No time limit here, either. - No retargeting, too. - Because of this, there is no party options verb, either. - The Melee classes have no skills, and this includes Rangers. Rangers don't have any magic, I think. - There are no area attacks here. - Magic appears as a battle command whether you have magic or not. - Willpower appears in the stats menu for every class, even for those melee classes that don't use it. Of course, it can be upgraded with the bonus points that you get when you level on melees, too. But why would you want to? - Dexterity here measures how well you crit; it does not reflect how accurate you are (as is it does in version 7). Agility I believe, plays a part in accuracy. Because of this, More people use thieves here because they have the highest Dex. - Theres a CPU stat here. It shows the host's cpu usage%. - The LvlUP stat is slightly different here. It shows how much exp that you have accumlated in total to reach the next level, not how much exp you need. - The music in South Kreland is different. The music is a much scarier theme, and I have no idea where it comes from. Dainaria, the fallen city, also has different music. (Its possible that other places have different music but I have yet to play this version all the way through). - None of the icons associated with the each of the cities are in yet. Houses are similar to Guilds here. - You start out with no money. - The Weapon and Armor shops' menus are different. Instead of showing you all the equipment that you can use, here, it shows everything that is available to buy, whether you can use it or not. Each equipment is marked by a number that shows which class can equip it. You can even buy equipment that you can't use, unlike in version 7. I believe the Alchemist shop's menus are more or less the same as version 7, with slight differences. Before the update on the potions prices in version 7, the prices here were the same as in v7. Now, they are more expensive. -Examine isn't in yet. Instead of a bugged version of it, Caction is and it does nothing. I don't remember the full story on this, but it wasn't supposed implemented yet from what I remember. - The Rest command isn't in. Better stock up on potions! - The Reboot verb is here. Too bad you have be an admin to use it. - Tell (which is whisper) is non-existent. - The Admin list isn't here, either. - Give gold is absent, too. - Recall hadn't been implentmented yet. Its a teleport to the last town that you have been in, basically. - No sound options. In order to turn off sound, you have to do it manually from BYOND. - Ignore is gone, too. - Same goes for the status verb, Away. - Equip and Unequip show up as verbs under commands instead of in the inventory tab when you right click your equipment. - Drink and Drop show up in commands tab as well as when you right click a potion and/or equipment, respectively. - I don't think there was a 2-boss limit in yet. Actually, at this point, there wasn't much need for one. So everyone who already killed Kaug could still party in the cathedral. The forget and remember verbs are non-existent.
I probably forgot some.
More to come as I find them in version 4. I think I'll play that right now...

Rangers do have magic, but they cannot transform or use camoflauge. However, the creatures you encounter have zero magic and abilities, so they only attack.
Dexterity did play a role in accuracy as well. In version four, missing was considered a hit type.
Caction was the name of the procedure used to speak to NPCs. However, they set the procedure as a verb instead of a proc under the obj path. The default src setting is in usr, meaning that all objects in your inventory would show up having this caction verb, even though it was suppose to be used for speaking to NPCs and did nothing at all since the messages were not even set that way.
There are ofcourse many other differences. Some are very large, some are more minor, such as party merging, or the more annoying, no save location. You always relog back in town.

The heck is the point of a Ranger then
Hmm...
Any plans to release a newer version at all?
Why only version 4?

There are currently no plans to release any newer version. With the release of version five, the game was greatly updated and has continued in that direction. The version four download is not meant to act a downloadable version of the game but more as a history of what the game use to be. Since version four, there have not been any major defining moments in the game that would warrent making another history downloadable version. Perhaps with major changes in version eight, with the different battle system and graphics, it may allow for version seven to be downloadable. We have not made a decision on that yet though.

Also, to add to what Vahu had said, there is no boss limit, but once you kill Val, you can not enter the Cathedral again Also, all the area's were already mapped, just not given monsters or even accessibility, V4 is also full of bugs as to what Kija said about the Version seven down-loadable thing, I think it would be great to be able to play the game without all those annoying bugs, and if the V8 server ever went down for a long period of time, someone would be able to host a V7 server and not have to worry about all those bugs and be able to enjoy getting past Ranook. But once again, its the Brotherhood's decision, so ultimately, its what they say goes.

Yes, it certainly would be, but weather or not it will become a part of history, we don't know. I hope it does because, with the release of V8, as Kija said, will be basically all new Battle System, and all the bosses remade. So, when V8 is released it will look like a whole different game, with the same story, then what it does now. I look forward to that Kija has put into it. Some people bitch about it taking so long, what they have to think about is, Kija is coding the whole new Battle System from scratch, as well as re-coding all the monsters, its not that simple. To edit them and make them stronger, he will need to add more lines of code and in the end, make sure it is not bugged and that it is more challenging to the players then they already are. He has put alot of his time and effort into making this game and some people don't appreciate what he has already done for THG, all they want is the newer version to come out, and they hate that release date, all they do is complain, they have not yet learned to appreciate what he has done, some people do, and that's why those people in question are usually respected and like more among the community.

the point of ranger is to make me look good. also, it's the only melee class in v4 that has a way outside of hp potions to sustain itself for long periods of time.
it's why i used a thief and ranger combo, one was the powerhouse and the other was the powerhouse-1 with PL capabilities. ranger was great for getting people to you while you continue to own on thief. that's how i used it anyways.
