I'll start off by saying I am really wanting to play THG over the summer again. Most kids are out of school now so you'd thing THG's average player count would be somewhat high, even during non-prime time hours. But it's not.
I'd like to discuss why we don't have a steady population anymore. Personally, I think it's because of the way v8 communication has been. Every time it's joked about, or asked about in earnest, the first and only response is always 'it'll be done when it's done.' What this does is quickly shoot down and discourage any thought, hope, or anticipation of it's release. This puts players off from being excited about a game. How long can you play a game after you've done everything it has to offer and not be excited about the next update or DLC?
Because of the way v7 is balanced it's difficult to solo. You have to build your character's stats a specific way. On the off chance you actually get to party, you ideally want your stats in other places.(specailization vs. generalization of stat builds). Obviously you can't change your stat arrangement every single time you log in.
That's just one big issue that can be discussed for awhile, but really the combat balance just doesn't support both party and solo play to the fullest it could be. On top of that, many old time regulars(including myself) have grown bored by the lack of 'new life' in the game. Without the community of players to ensure a party is always available to join, this game isn't worth playing. The solo aspect just isn't supported enough, as mentioned above.
Thus there are two main ways to save the game as it stands. Obviously, v8 could be released. Entirely or not entirely. An update that releases new areas to explore and new enemies to slay could be entirely different than an update that changes the battle mechanics. That may or may not help expedite the release process. I don't know. D:
The other way is to magically attract the community of BYOND back to the game. Get people excited about the game again, so there is buzz to be discussed.
I'd hate to see this game wither and die, and I certainly hope The Brotherhood hasn't given up on it yet. We are all close to each other and I know shit happens IRL. Perhaps design and direction of v8 got so overhyped that it was too ambitious and all hope or excitement was lost. Now is the time this needs to change though. Now is the time to re-think from a fresh , clean slate.
I can't remember how long it has been since anyone has said anything about v8. Or from Kija.
BYOND is a wonderful platform that has seen many games come and go. It is rather painful to see the game in it it's current state, still breathing but with no life or excitement left. I'd like to see the game last much much longer. It already has to be one of the only games still in existance after such a long time of being here. The only other game I can think of would be MLAAS (if it is even hosted still) or the last survivor of the icon game wars, Icon Ultima.
THG is more of a tradition than any other game out there. So let's discuss realistically how we can bring it new life. If you think there is an issue that I didn't mention here that may be causing our current dilemma, then post that along with ways to solve it. Or, respond to various issues I touched on, or just give thoughts on how to realistically do a minimalist v8 release and reinvigorate that creative spark in our dear and beloved Brotherhood. Come on, community! We're in this together! D;
