Denizens of FFTHG.
Today, I experienced something I thought this computer would never have to go through.
While going through the Sunken Temple instance on World of Warcraft, I was experiencing quite a big of lag. I had asked my teammates if they were lagging, but they were apparently just fine with no lag whatsoever.
We got to a major boss, Avatar of Hakkar, when WoW minimized itself... why? The server was rebooting. Because of that, my computer was going at rates of about two frames per minute trying to switch out to the operation. After about five minutes, I was finally able to Alt-Tab back into WoW, with a nice "6 minutes until release" message waiting for me, and one of my Teammates saying "wtf poroso". Not a moment later did the screen completely freeze up. Having tried everything (Ctrl+alt+Del, holding the power button in, alt-tab), I was forced to reboot my computer by unplugging it.
In short, I just can't do this anymore. This server is driving me crazy and i've come close to beating the monitor's face in on at least two occasions. I've never experienced such violent slowdown before hosting THG.
I don't care if you guys think this is selfish or greedy of me. This is a $900 computer that I just bought just this year... WITH MY FUCKING TAX RETURN MONEY... and I can't even use it for what I want. Hosting this game is an extreme sacrifice on my part that I highly regret doing.
No, I don't hate you guys. I love this community and I wish I could host properly, but this is just something I can't do anymore. But using this valuable computer for something that less than 200 people play regularly is really just ridiculous. Having to leave major raids in WoW, not being able to host other things for my friends, and use my computer for anything relatively useful is really a waste. And being IMed because someone said "Leeroy Jenkins" in allcaps once it just bull.
The day Version 8 is completed (Which will be maybe a month or two from now), we will find a new host. Until then, I'll keep hosting, and try to keep a happy face doing it.
Your save files will be SAFE. I am going to get an FTP server, even if it costs me money, so I can transfer them over to Kija, whom will use them to whomever we see fit for the job.
[edit] I'm also starting college soon and i'll be out of the house for 8+ hours a day. I can't babysit you guys forever
Thank you for reading this, everyone.
Your beloved Host, Mettool

After I move out, I plan on spending alot of money for a very good connection *Possibly a t-1*, and if I get to keep this computer, I will see if I can host,
*Note this would be around August of next year*

Damn... Yeah, I don't think your selfish Mett. You've been doing this for how long? Since summer or so (I wasn't around, so I don't know exactly when), However Sir, Selfish would have been quitting after the first time you got pissed off. But you didn't and you kept along with things. Your being on call at late nights incase something happened (From what I've seen the past 3 weeks, you've been excellent). This game just seems to be a big responsibility for a small base of gamers. Even when mahn hosted and he was on call 24 hours a day (What happened to him anyways? He's been gone for the past few weeks.), it still took a hit on his $1,300 computer. I just think that maybe this game is getting to be too big for a single personal computer to handle (that's being used for other things besides the game, which sorta stresses the word personal even more) and I don't know what's up anymore. I really enjoy playing this game and I love the community, it's one of the reasons I came back. Although it's a stretch, maybe that fiber connection that Hiro might be getting before long is what this games needs for it. But even then, it's just one computer handling the whole game by itself, I don't know if we'd run into the same problem or not. Maybe a Bittorrent sort of engine would be better for the game (Everyone pulls off each other). I don't know how that'd work, and I really don't think renting a server is the way to go either. I'd be the first to donate $5 if that's the future of FF:THG, but how many others would forever? I mean, you guys helped create the game, you shouldn't be the ones paying for the server, but with the way people come and go every now and then, who's to say what would happen? It'd be a month to month thing of worrying, and stressing for donations at the end of the month isn't how I want to see FF:THG Go. Then there is the crashing, which I don't think a server would be the answer to at all. Sometimes it requires a hardboot, and if the game was running on a paid server, who's to say that would ever get done? Maybe somehow the game's hosting could be shared between two or more computers. Somehow both ends could have access to hardboot the game if need be, and maybe it would bring down the toll the game takes on one computer alone. Maybe a revolutionary byond code that let's people help the host of the server take down the memory usage of their computer. I got no clue how that'd work, but it sounds good in my head and on paper to me. Hell, I'd help with that kind of thing whenever I played and even when I left the computer. I just don't know exactly what direction things are gonna take and this paragraph is just a suggestion. Anyways, back to ya mett. Thx for the hosting b/c it's alot better than how hosting could have ended up (Late v4... Ughhhh, like 7 different hosts.). I appreciate it and I'm sure everyone else has as well. I hope college goes good for ya and I'll see you around . Peace out.

Maybe link to 2 computers on a network, and host it from the network or something. Dunno how that would work, but I don't doubt the doability of it.

I read that all processing is done on the host's end alone, so I can't imagine two computers being able to "share" a workload, and there would never be any donations for FF:THG ever. That's taking money for a fangame and Byond would be at your doorstep once it finds out.

Not only Byond, but as well as Square. By violating the rules of free gaming upon fangames, Byond would close liability for us, probably, in which case Square would probably swoop in, and finish the kill. Lets not bring up ideas of which that will kick us in both the ass and crotch. --------------------(Insert special meaning here)-------------------- I do hope that Hiro does get his fiber connection. If that is not the case, then we will have to look into other possible hosts within of what we have. It is doubtful that it would fall onto a player. I will say that first of all. And IF such a case were to happen, I am also going to say that it will be just like a Bhood enrollment. We will not look at connection or activity, but at the person themself. Do not mistake a host's capabilities by his connection. That is never what makes a good host. Just throwing it out as a failsafe, so that we do not get people asking for it based on their connection. Other than that, think nothing of this post under the "special meaning", I suppose. xD

okay, some more good news...theres a possibility i may be getting a laptop for my birthday (Monday Jan. 9th)...if i do, it'll be a good one, with a wireless Intarwebby, that coupled with the possible fiber connection means ultimate mobility for me and the server which means i can play X-box/Gamecue(Revolution when i get it -- same with 360) AND if the server crashes i'm right there, as well, if i went to a friends house for the night or something and they or someone near by has internet? i can take the server there as well, now, mind you this is a SLIGHT possibility, my mom says i won't get the gift until my desk and surrounding area is cleaned up so it could be a second monitor or some new peice of furniture.. so lets just hope its a laptop. ;D

Sounds like FF:THG needs a shell server and not another host.

That's going to be one hell of a laptop if it's going to run FF:THG for us.
I know I won't have a problem with anything if the game goes down for as long as it did the last time we switched hosts (having more than one thing to occupy free time is a bonus). Long as we don't get a host that decides at moments notice ''Oh! U did something wr0ng! *deletes all your character files* haha sukz 2 b U''

okay, my mom says it deffinately ain't a laptop, she could be trying to fool me, but oh well, if it's a second monitor i could run FFTHG and another full-screen game, that would work nicely as well...i'll find out tomorrow 'round dinner time, until then...wishful thinking everyone

Second off, our homie-ly neighborhood other BH members would probably have backup savefiles. Insult + injury = pwned host

And, I have hosted for Rise of Heroes before.. Was rated pretty good there. So, I have some experience.

I believe it's been said, that no adminship will be outright given to someone due to their connection, nor can you host without an admin. Read the rules, sheesh. Also, this thread should have been dead by now..
