This is somewhat similar to the "Special Event" days idea brought up by Mahn. It's basically a variation to the "Live Quests" that are in a game which I used to play. I have two ways in which this idea could be applied to the game.
First idea:
Anyways, this idea is, at a set time by an administrator, or instantly activated, or even randomly activated by the game itself, there is a "disruption" in the game. All monsters in any non-boss battles are wiped out, with players receiving 50% gold and EXP as if they had won the battle. Then, a sort of "call to adventure" message pops up. It would basically give some sort of "hint" to a special area with special monsters that give increased rewards or so. A dungeon would open up in each hunting ground, and players must journey into these areas to kill a "boss" at the end of the dungeon. The areas would be restricted, so you can't have already killed the Hunting Ground's boss. Once the boss of an area is killed, the dungeon in the area would "collapse" and everyone inside the dungeon would be forced to recall; no encounters after the boss is killed, relogging in the area would teleport you to the last savepoint. Players already fighting battles can finish up and recall after. No other people can enter the dungeon now.
Second Idea:
After the call to adventure (world-message indicating a random event occuring), a randomly placed dungeon in South Kreland opens up. All players may enter the dungeon, but the dungeon will have different levels, such as the PoP players must fight through levels of SK, DM, SS and IC existing monsters before reaching the "PoP" area. The monsters here would be a bit harder, but with still reasonable rewards so that it does not make such a huge impact on players' levelling. Once players kill a certain amount of monsters, "readied" parties get the opportunity to fight a special "boss" monster. Once the bosses of each area is killed, the area disappears and event ends.
The idea for the second one, is that all monsters of an existing HG are mixed together (like having Armadons, Cave Ogres, Worms and Snowmen all in one battle, with mixed small ones as well --- IC).
