...helped trigger an old idea I'd been fostering (and had forgotten about):
Basically, allow players to invest money (or battle time) into attempting to rebuild ruined areas and/or cleanse those areas of the taint and evil influence within. As an example, players could run around above ground in the ruins of Dainaria and beat up various undead. As they kill a certain amount of undead (10,000 or so), the rate at which monsters (fights) spawn would decrease. Those who are unwilling to fight, regardless of their reasons, they could 'donate' gold to the Kingdom of Dainaria in order to raise the funds needed for rebuilding materials.
After a certain level of progress/purging is done, Dainaria could look slightly better; maybe a few of the buildings show minor signs of reconstruction, or maybe some of the pathways and ground don't look like death warmed over. Overall though, things are still desolate and descecrated. Dainaria is still a ghost town tainted with evil energies... but progress has nonetheless been made. A sticking point is that the underground would remain fully populated by the dead no matter how much progress is made above ground; those willing to venture in to Dainaria and repair it will only go so far.
Once Dainaria is 'completely' repaired, the area around the stairway down would still look devastated and it would be guarded with NPCs that warn new players about what lies below. Above ground though, Dainaria has regained some of its lost glory. There are signs here and there of the damage and destruction that took place, but it is once again truly a city. Life and development has replaced death and decay, and people can find a measure of safety within its walls once more.
Imagine the same taking place in other minor Hunting Grounds, or indeed areas yet to be given form (Benmoro, the caverns west of Anara, the top section of Ranook's graveyard). Players having the ability to, over the span of months or possibly years, reverse the damage done to Darlow.
Of course, there are limits. The Nexus Cathedral would remain unrecoverable, as would all of the other major Hunting Grounds. Again, there are some places that workers and repairers refuse to step foot in. Sure, the idea is a little MMORPG-ish, but if done well, it'd be something that helps further develop a unique identity for FFTHG.
