The biggest problem I have with the concept of the ambush is that if you are at level one, and fight right at the beginning where the bridge is, you will probably die. There's no avoiding it at times. Either ambushes need to be easier, or there needs to be none while you are at the first two levels or so. That way, it is feasable for someone to beat the game without ever dying. It needs to be difficult, yes, but if it isn't feasable to survive the entire game except by chance, then something is wrong with this picture.

There is much more wrong than just that. The version eight battle system fixes these problems, but before then, not much can really be done. It is possible to remove or lessen ambushes for lower levels, which could help beginners and is not too bad of a suggestion; however, there are still plenty of problems later on.

It is feasible to survive the entire game by more than chance, just requires a great deal of patience and careful action. I had a naked, solo, level 1 white mage make her way through a 2 ogre and one giant rat ambush, which is about as bad as they get for one person on the plains of kreland. A fully equipped character shouldn't have a bad time of things.
