This would be a big change, but I think it is something that needs to happen sometime. For now, The Hunting Grounds is using icons from the game Final Fantasy, but I think we need to take the next step and start remaking all of the icons.
We have several people who are good with working with sprites, and with enough practice, I am sure that they can start making them.
In order to further progress the game, we need to start adding more original aspects to it, and getting rid of the old icons will definatly help.
Some of you may not like this change, so I want to see your opinions on this. I think it would be an awesome change to have to help further the game; there is a lot of work involved, but it would be worth it.
With the change of icons, we would also have to get rid of any copyrighted music and sounds as well, but there should be plenty of good music to use or make.

I do not like this idea one bit. Before you jump on me and say "lol, Mettool disagrees as usual", lemme explain.
One of the most important aspects of any BYOND game is it's history and tradition. FF is something that is a part of THG, and I think it should always be that way. If you take out something that is so familiar to everyone, you're ruining years of THG history. And people will be furious about that.
You can only tweak a game so much before it isn't the original idea anymore. I really don't think the icons should be changed.

It'd be a slippery slope. When we change the icons, we would also have to change the name of the game. When we change that, there's also changing the names of the abilities and classes (when people see Dragoon, they think FF; when they see the name Red Mage, they think FF; when they see Jump, Aurabolt, Pummel, Nuke, Pearl, White, etcetera, they think FF). When we change those, then we have the problem that roughly 90% of the monster icons are either taken directly from a FF game, or they're a palette swap that didn't show up in a FF game (monsterous cacti, death veggies, titans, black widows, giant snowmen, cave ogres, dust devils, etc).
You're looking at creating new icons for about 100 monsters and 50 character types. You're looking at new names for half of the classes, maybe half of the skills/spells, and so on. In other words, this would involve more than just new icons. Also, like Mett said, we'd be throwing out a vast majority of the game's familiarity.
Let Skyre be the major departure from Final Fantasy's roots; no sense in doing so with a game steeped in a Final Fantasy style for over three years.

I realize that there are a lot of icons, and that the name of the game should be changed, but that was the is whole point of it.
We would not have to change the name any of the skills or classes though; although Final Fantasy is known for using them, other games do as well. You are acting as though that by changing the icons, we must avoid any aspect of being similiar to Final Fantasy, but that is not true.
Having new icons will make the game look better, but the style of Final Fantasy is still there; the roots are still there.
Skyre will be a major departure from it, besides that Dagolar is still using Final Fantasy icons. But that does not mean this game cannot further itself as well; there is no good reason why this game should remain with such icons just because it's in its history.
Also, "And people will be furious about that." Stryfe was talking to a few players about what that they thought about having new icons. Not a single person said they would hate it; they either said something like, "I do not care" or "Finally!", because they were happy to be rid of the crappy recolours.
Whether it is in the game's history or not, it should not mean that it must remain a part of its future. Sometimes it is better to leave the past behind and go for something better. Do you really think the current recolours make the game better? I would love to look at a creature and see something new, not just so some old icon with a different set of colours that we saw in the previous area. From many other people I have spoken to, they say that is what makes the game more boring. They get to a new area, and there is no real new creature; it is the same old icon, with a few new colours.
There is plenty sense to do it. Having a game with old icons that are all recolours does not look good.
"Hey there is another imp but he a green clothes instead, yay! Oh look at the golem with grey skin instead, awesome!"
It is true the game has the name Final Fantasy for a long time, but that should not mean we should never change. If nothing ever changed, nothing would ever be better.

i'd like to say, when people FIRSt got to ToTE and Thunder Dragons, they were happy and surprised by the Thunder Dragon, EVERYONE expected it to be like Ice/Zombie Dragons, i go either way with this, it would suck to lose the familiarty with the game, but nice to see a change with monsters.
[EDIT] as well, is it just monster icons that will be changed? i'm going to create a dupe file of monsters and start messing around.[EDIT]

Since there are some mixed opinions about this, it would be good if you we could have a meeting, where we could all talk together on the subject.
So far the date is Monday, 5:00pm central time. If anyone cannot make it, please post a date or time more convenient for you.

If you are unable to make it at this time, please post a time or date that you will be able to.

Hey Kija, just for the record, I never said I talked to any of the players of what they thought of taking away the FF name O.o
Btw, let's hope everyone can be on time for the meeting. If this goes into the weekend, I know I won't make it Sunday.

I never said you did. If you read my post, I said that you talked to them, not that you said that you did.
I was online when you made an annoucement with the command to the server announcing the change; there was a small discussion among the players afterwards, in which you participated in.

Yeah, but that was before you explained you were taking the FF name away to me, I thought you were talking about re-editing all the sprites.

Yes, that is true, but in my statement I said "about having new icons.", not "about taking away the name."
Although, most assumed that by having new icons, the name will be gone as well, since people were talking about the game being removed from the fan games section.

I know this post is ages old, but I figured there was no point in making a new one. This may sound pretty self-explanatory, but here goes. With the coming BYOND 4.0, and the fact of advanced classes coming into play, I think the best time to make and create new icons with better animations, maybe some differing attack animations and..well, everything, technically could be done.... I think it should be done before we think about uploading the new class and level system, along with everything else going into the works.
Having new animations will go along well with the concept of making weapon-specific skills, and adding to the inventory of available weapons//armour. Also, with deflecting and parrying coming into play soon as well, that's also something to think about.
Personally, with all the things I've heard about icon choices in the past..I know this will be a HUGE amount of work and overhaul..but I think perhaps 2 icons, per class, per gender, in each kingdom might well be needed, with the accompanying animations thereunto.
Discuss at leisure, we've plenty of time to put plans into motion about this kind of thing.

Doing the icons at the same time will be required. The new level system requires new class icons, and the new battle system requires new creature icons because of the new size.
When making the new battle icons, small creatures are going to be within the 32x32 tile range. Normal would be around 64x64 with either height or width smaller depending on what it is. Large creatures will take it further with 96x96.
I want to see more attack animations, wounded states and death states. I also want to see these stort of animations and states with creatures too. Instead of the creature fading away, for instance, their corpse could still be on the battle map, allowing for new situations to occur, such as another creature casting life on it.
