Okay, for a long time now I've been saying this, and most may take it as a joke, but it is not. Typing like a moron should be considered spam and treated as such. I know wisdom's needlessly overworded jumbled posts have gotten him in trouble in the past, and I agree whole heartedly with that. I would like to see it apply in game too. To me, it shows a serious lack of respect to your fellow gamers when you blather on and on with such gibberish as "lokin 4 prty 2 hlp kel bose in cathdral plz n hlp leevl ^ 4 sew kel bose eser n ne prty in roose 4 hlp trane 4 bose?" etc. Calling it a lack of respect is further supported because when you approach these people about cleaning up there spelling so you can understand what they say, you're usually met with such bullshit as "dis iz inertnt i nawt in skewl so stfu lolz". If you recognize it as unreadable bullshit and make no effort to correct it, and still post it over wsay or on these forums, you should be treated the same as someone babbling on in some foreign language or spamming outright. Thoughts?

You have the balls to say something I have been wanting to for ages now. I completely agree with you; there are posts on the forums which has a lack of punctuation marks, and at times those posts seem unintelligible at best, and that isn't even the worst of it. {Not blatantly pointing fingers.} If people don't have the time to make their posts or messages intelligent, well thought out, and most importantly understandable, why should they have the time to play a game period? Why should they have the time to EAT if they can't type out the word, 'you'. Obviously, eating is a much more time consuming tasks, and should be avoided just because they aren't in school.

That's why when those people that babble on and on with their run-on sentences come here with that, they're mostly ignored.
Then there's the people that really can't spell. But we can't take their lack of an education out on them because of the other type. I do agree that looking at crap like that is a time consuming task in and of itself, it also causes migraine headaches.

I agree with this idea COMPLETELY. I am sick and tired of seeing folks continuously typing like retards because "this ain't sckool lolol". If you want to be respected as a player, show us respect by first typing like a normal person would be. There are some folks that I've seen that are non-native English speakers, and they're infinitely much easier to understand than this lol-speak garbage. Please create a rule to make people actually need to type like they have some sort of intelligence.
ADDENDUM: If you can't spell a word, asking about it and then using the correct spelling when given is one way to make us not be so damn pissed off. If you don't know how to spell some word, ask if you spelled it right, and we'd be more than glad to help you spell correctly. Being rude just sets us off.

Har, I remember the (somewhat?)old days in forums where there was such a thing as "(sp?)", which basically meant that you weren't sure if you spelled it correctly or not, and would welcome a correction. Now, if you try to fix someone's spelling, they go off like a bomb.

Thanks for bringing this up, I was just about to add, I am not expecting everyone to suddenly display impeccable spelling and grammar, because, well, it'll never happen. What I'm more concerned about is putting some effort into making a statement readable; there's no need to turn every other word into a number and never glance at the comma or period on your keyboard. If you refuse to make an effort to type intelligibly, you should just not inflict yourself on worldsay or these forums.

I see no reason not to support this. Bombing on someone or saying "lololo dis isnt skewl" is disrespectful and telling someone to "stfu" when they try to help make you not seem retarded is EXACTLY that, disrespectful. I'm surprised it took this long for a formal request along the lines to be brought up.

How much extra effort does it take to type like you do for a school essay or assignment? It can't be too much, in fact, abbreviating requires me to use more effort because I actually have to think about what abbreviation to use (I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else). >_>

If you want to post opposition to this idea, Wisdom, for whatever reason thinking that "Because it's what they see other people do!" then that's fine. Even though most of us try to set a different example anyway which you'd notice if you werent clogging the Worldsay with smileys. But there's no need to be a jackass about it, mmkay? (And if they DID see numberspeech somewhere, even still I doubt they'd automatically go to doing that in a game where as it is over half the server knows what numbers and letters are.)

It is always a wonder how words are manipulated to make a simple reply to a topic seem incorrect. I dont think i stress it enough, but perspective is an important factor we should consider since there is no need to insult anyone. The main reason to join a forum is to get closer and communicate with others open minded and not have to insult, so i wouldnt be here if it wasnt for that. i understand and take each person here as human and so small insults to my person dont matter, so ill disregard the whole "Wisdom, you are "mean" stuff i always get. Theres a reason i replied to the post and your views differ dramatically and i see a strong opposition from you Sur Realis. I was giving feedback in another perspective and yet again, you fail to respect my view. Rand, you along with the other administrators make the final decision, so theres no need to worry if my views differ. Just to "Clarify?", typing like a moron ONLY applies to "lokin 4 prty 2 hlp kel bose in cathdral plz n hlp leevl" type of wording, and therefore it always cycles back to the ignore option. Realis, you have decided to ignore me so i did you a favor and ignored you if i really am such a bother, see? problem solved. Seeing someone type differently and not as you want it can also consider this same option. It really isnt hard. I have a tendency to use smileys since thats my personality, a way of expression to show my mood, and most of the time it is . If there is a problem with it, let me know and ill be sure to take out those keys from my keyboard, just as the regulation on the talk in wsay. Thanks =) ~InfiniteWisdom

So, what you are saying is that you wholeheartedly approve of what ZeroSkye was doing on the public channels yesterday, saying halfway sexual innuendos that could be seen as something else? What you said and are saying contradicts you in multiple ways:
1) "...perspective is an important factor we should consider since there is no need to insult anyone."
What you first posted was, in my perspective, an insult to my intelligence, an insult to LP's intelligence, and an insult to the entire idea of the topic; you acted like we wanted everyone to type -perfect fucking grammar- when, even the freakin' name of the Subject, shows a complaint of typing like an -idiot-. If you can't consider the perspective of others, why should I do the same to you? You have to meet God halfway, y'know.1
2) "...Realis, you have decided to ignore me so i did you a favor and ignored you if i really am such a bother, see? problem solved."
Obviously the problem is NOT solved if you are still talking to me in the first place. Besides, the first time I ignored you on Wsay was because I did not want to listen to your opinion, which has a similar problem to #1.2
3) "I was giving feedback in another perspective and yet again, you fail to respect my view."
You may have been talking in another perspective, and I'm almost glad that -someone- wants to keep things the way they are, if they too are as stupid is those commiting the crime or not3, because it at least shows that some of the dumbasses that do speak like that have the actual brainpower enough to defend their wants. What you were doing was acting as if this was an extremity rule, as if we were going to become a fucking Grammar Concentration Camp. Where, pray-tell, WHERE did you see, "PERFECT" before your post?4
- EDIT 3 -
Until you can show me that what you said logically connects to the topic at hand and was actually a worthwhile comment, I will stand by my opinion that all the post did was insult.
- /EDIT -
Or did you jump to conclusions? Like you did with MY post in reply to YOUR post. All my post said was that you had just insulted me, more or less, and that your reasoning made no sense under the context given. You could have done something as simple as explaining why you went off on such a tangent. Instead, I get, "I'm right you're wrong deal with it." And I don't care how much you defend that post, that's what it says. You are hiding behind the pretense that people will look at things differently, but there are COMMON VIEWS. Hell, I may admit my view isn't part of that, but what you have done is blatantly insulted me.
How would you like it if I called you a smudge on the timeline of the world, then hid behind the fact that statement could be viewed as, "You are so great God doesn't want other's to know who you are." Does that not seem a bit farfetched? If it does, then we are on the same level.
Not only did you jump conclusions in here, but also when I ignored you. Oh shit, someone ignored you. My god, that's IMPOSSIBLE. Hell, you know what, if I could I would have ignored myself a long time ago, I'm that god damned annoying. Why should the world end when you've been temporarily ignored? You didn't even consider that, y'know, maybe I was in a bad mood and didn't feel like arguing. I -ignore- people just so I don't bring up a damned argument, alright? If you don't like that, then maybe you SHOULD ignore me, and if you are then don't bother using me as a reference through the forums either.
- EDIT -
And before you reply to this post, read it again. Read it as many times as you need until you understand what I am trying to say here, because your next reply will most likely insult me also, which as you've said there is no need to.
- EDIT 2 - For your convenience, footnotes:
1 I am not saying I am God. I am comparing to the situation that if you want something done you have to go just as much distance as the other person.
2 What ZeroSkye was saying through public channels was insulting to multiple different groups and people, mainly to Alexenforcer and homosexuals. He said things that were intended to be understood as sexual messages even though at the same time they were most certainly understandable the other way ~ you saying he shouldn't have been banned for such asshattery makes you just as bad as ZeroSkye himself, and encourages the talk of sex on the Wsay channel even though it is meant for family friendly chatting. There are times when the minority view should be disconsidered because the common view disrupts the server. If you think that he wasn't trying to say sexual messages, good for you, but more people than not read "<ZeroSkye is on top of ZeroAce" as a sex joke, which is utterly unwanted over Wsay. Family friendly, Wisdom, any parent that sees that message will immediately think it as a sex joke, not as a "LOL STAKKING" joke.
3 No, I am not calling you as stupid as 'them'. I hope you didn't even fathom taking it so, because then you wouldn't have considered my perspective. Yeah, I'm pressing on the point until it hurts.
4 I put a lot of blame into this topic, and I truly believe it, and it is my perspective. Consider it.
-
Congratulations Wisdom, you are the first person that I've had to make FOOTNOTES for.

Ive learned a lot in the past and it seems to be reoccurring so im doing the simple thing and stepping back as usual. Sometimes my view isnt considered and that is fine. I am sorry if you were having a bad day yesterday, but that shouldnt be the reason to take it out on others. Sur Realis, regardless of the situation, i still like you and respect you as a member of THG. I dont like to cause problems and thats why i will no longer proceed with giving my view in this thread. They say that you cant solve problems by running away, but i like to use Wisdom and not dwell on the situation. When you are having a good day, hopefully you will get back to me, but you should know me quite well enough to know that i dont like turmoil. I wish you the best Shane, i really do, and im sorry for thinking differently just to prove a point. Again, i never meant any disrespect or insult, and i myself like the idea in this thread, but i see a different side to it. Yours Truly..... ~InfiniteWisdom PS: I have love for everyone and that is the reason that sometimes silence is the best approach at a situation. For those that believe in enemies and continued conflict however, the only thing to remember is love.... Martin Luther King, Jr.: Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.

Fuckups are fien i jest want to sea sum effert from teh pearson speeking. Was what I just typed badly spelled? Yep. Did it display less than stellar grammar? Better believe it. Was it still understandable? Damn right it was. THAT is what I want to see enforced.

You can stress your ideas and opinions without ALWAYS making someone get pissed off at you, Wisdom. You *always* choose to word things in a way that will either insult someone, make them feel that you're calling them an idiot, or in an administrator's case , often mine, that we're abusive or don't give a damn about anything going on here. Until I see that change I guess I'm going to keep on as I have with anything you put in to a conversation. Go ahead and rip those smiley keys out of your keyboard. Thanks. =)

I cant Rand, its not in the rules!(More smileys ftw!) besides i need these smileys so i can draw hearts and stuff o.0 The unique characteristics that a person holds are the ones we like and treasure about them so i dont think i will change because these traits are what i am comprised of . Why no change? I always word things for a reason Rand, but of course not many like to decipher anything so it is sometimes regarded as mean. I guess i am different and whatever way someone words things( includes cursing, insults, or negativity), the type of person you are will get ahold of you and interpret the message as you are. i have learned to control and hold back negative feelings when i receive evil and mean comments and i guess we all need to do this so we dont always get angry/upset. Of course, i myself like to meet different people and i dont ask for change since thats what defines them. As far as the topic, i have always seen effort, thats how i am able to understand everybody o.o hooray Of course, i guess i elaborated and looked upon the thread with more depth. I guess THG is doing so far so good w00t ^_^ ~InfiniteWisdom

There's no matter of perspectives and expressing your individuality when it comes to using the language properly, and using it improperly. Most of your posts in this topic are completely and utterly unrelated to the issue of people typing sloppily and then getting upset because no one can read the shit they spewed all over their keyboard. I'm sick of seeing it, I want to see rules introduced that punish indecipherable typing, and others agree with me that such rules should be introduced. Address this topic in a relevant manner, please, or simply do not post in it.

I guess THG is doing so far so good w00t ^_^ ~InfiniteWisdom The act of communication is an exchange - a transactional process. It is a process of creating and exchanging meaning through symbolic interaction. There are nine components of the communication process - context, physical environment, climate, communicator, message, channel, noise, barrier, feedback. Feedback assures the sender that communication has occured. It allows them to adjust or modify a message, and then provides insight into their communication -- Feedback completes the circular pattern of communication. It allows a sender to adjust a message when feedback indicates that there is a lack of understanding by the reciever. The sender may restate the idea, provide an example, or give a definition. Sending a message does not mean that you are done with your job. Communication is a never-ending process, unintentional or intentional. When recievers lack understanding of the message, it is generally up to the sender to elaborate. Failure to do so and assumption that it is entirely up to the reciever to understand the message shows your incompetence of communication. Furthermore, you are contradicting your own damned complaints that we should learn to view things in someone else's perspective, when you aren't doing it for us who CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING.

I knew who made this topic before the page even loaded. -_-
I'm disgusted by how many people actually support this. Yeah, typing in netspeak isn't the greatest way to communicate, but I, personally, can understand it just fine most of the time, and in any case, saying that it's spam is going way overboard. The only such thing I'd agree with is disallowing people from typing in leet, because that really can be hard to understand. Anyways, if you don't like how other people type, too bad. Quit trying to force your way of typing on everyone else and go cry moar.

There is no way, absolutely no way I can see cracking down on people for the way they choose to type. It's not as if it is illegible. And besides..doing it as a joke is fun. But that would be like the government trying to crack the whip at people for speaking ebonics. If the way someone is typing annoys you, there is always the ignore function. You don't need US there to hold your hand for every little problem you have.

If either of you guys were on a little more, you might realize why they're asking for this. One or two people sometimes doing this is one thing, and if that were all I'd laugh it off. But when someone sits there and says "stfu lol i lik typn lk a dis" you know there's different reasons involved and be damned if I haven't learned how to translate simply by having to go through crap people spam on the server. Asking people to show a little intelligence isn't that bad a thing in my eyes. So is supporting common sense and legibility a bad thing now? Should I go and cry?

I have no problems reading what people type. What i see as spam is excessive pointless text, no need to make so much detail, or argue with anyone either.
If someone even starts an argument in a thread or on Wsay, please don't argue back, just let someone else correct him/her, or wait for a BH to handle the situation. What I'm saying is, you already made your point, NO NEED to repeat yourself. Do that and there will be so much less spam. It's not that hard to make a point without typing your fingers off.
Hell, some people's posts I don't even bother to read anymore. A waste of time I tell you! XD

If either of you guys were on a little more, you might realize why they're asking for this. Yeah, 'cause I haven't seen anything in the nearly five years since I started playing THG. And what's so bad about that quote aside from the bypass? I read it just fine. If you can't understand that u = you, 4 = for, etc., then maybe the person typing in netspeak isn't the unintelligent one. When you want to force a bunch of people to either conform to your standards or be punished over something so trivial as how they type, I'd say so. Additionally, I'd say that creating and enforcing such a rule isn't exactly full of "common sense". Yes.

Well, everyone does type fairly differently, so who are we to judge the way they type? I'm not saying I'm on the side with those who type incorrectly, but I also do not agree with those of you who do type correctly. People are different in their own way, and that includes those people who choose to type in their so called "Chatspeak". But that doesn't really mean that the way they are typing is incorrect, is it? It's just because it's not the way you type.
There was this situation that happened today at school, which sort of relates to this in some way. A student pointed out that the word centimeter was spelled wrong on a Calculator. The teacher replies, "No, it's spelled the old way. Just because it's not the way you spell it, doesn't mean it's wrong."
I really don't mind those other people that decide to type in "Chatspeak", so long as it's readable. As for the spelling, not everyone spells everything correctly.

The teacher replies, "No, it's spelled the old way. Just because it's not the way you spell it, doesn't mean it's wrong."
I really don't mind those other people that decide to type in "Chatspeak", so long as it's readable. As for the spelling, not everyone spells everything correctly. This is why I <3 Hikari. *gives gummies*

Soren, Kain. I can understand why you think we're being grammar nazis when we're asking why we want this kind of rule in place. However, we don't want to just ban all netspeak whatsoever.
We want people to actually put effort in to be able to understand eachother more. I've had folks talk even worse than what Rand described, and they would refuse to type out what they had meant. If a majority of folks cannot understand what someone is saying, it is pretty much considered spam in my eyes.
Also, one can argue that the "Only speak in English" rule could be in effect, since netspeak is branching off English so much that it can be considered its own damn language, with proper training required to understand just what the hell people are trying to say in it.
We just want the game to be infinitely more enjoyable without getting headaches from the folks who refuse to type anything out, and thus look like all they ever spew out is random gibberish.
