I'd be glad to share the honors! =) This is a story dedicated to the history of the BH. It is close to as accurate as I can get it. If anyone would like some portions to be further elaborated, feel free to make comments. Perhaps you were an oldbie and would like to chime in on some past memories pertaining to the history here. Enjoy!
Well, It started oooh...as you all know, back in v4. Kaug was the last boss, and the Ranook Graveyard was the final dungeon. The highest level was on average, 20. The highest people on the game were 25+.
The first host to my memory was Terra(Shoobs). The game was originally created by the cooperation of Loud, Thorg, Xenthier(dungeon maps etc), Poggy(Pogrus), Mettool, and Dagolar.
I was introduced to the game by a good friend KileTerro, who has some of his own byond works. I joined lets see...right as Terra left as host, and Dagolar had been forced to find another host..who unthinkable would not host very often at all, and in the end I had taken up the position, with no save files transferred from the last host.
At this point in time Pogrus and Shoobs still came around and said Hi now and then. We still had that dreaded clone bug for boss fights. >=o.
Anyways, ya know, I really forget why I stopped hosting. I do remember Dag asking to shut the game down a few times because of the clone bug. Moving on. When we were ready to put the game back up, I believe I had gone on a hiatus for a few weeks, and I think this is when Dagolar first opened v4 to be hosted by the public. Megan/Matt character had the most stable server and it was up fairly often, with bearable lag. This person eventually became honorary BH member in recognition of the hosting dedication shown. Mahn continued to host after matt/megan stopped. Mahn was the dedicated host for -nearly- an entire year's worth of time. The game slowly lost and gained players.
From time to time I would poke my head into FF:THG and see how it was going. One day, Dagolar popped in at the same time to see how everyone was. It was a Nostolgic day. He mentioned to the server and myself that he was working on Skyre(skure2) and that It was heavily role-play oriented. He encouraged everyone that day to check out a site he had setup, and think about making a character or not. This 'Skyre' was truely great. It was D&D on-line. Everyone Picked from various classes, picked their own names, character backgrounds...And with the help of the amazing storyline and world Dagolar had created, there were some great characters.
After a few months of Skyre work, Dagolar announced he could no longer continue, as we slowly lost attendance at our 'runs'. A few of us players -begged- that we be allowed to continue work on the BYOND portion of his great storyline. We set into teams to tackle the re-vamping and re-releasing of v4. Tral and Myself were on code duty. Zhyn, General _yo_snake_, and Calmar were on graphics duty. Mahn was to do items, and Faru game balancing. Kija and Ayerik were our team managers, and Ayerik was to create a new website using select information from Dag's original Skyre information site.
The original v4 was never meant to be updated at all, in truth. Dagolar said the code was so messed up, it wasn't worth fixing; that it'd all have to be re-done....**(see below for an amazing feat of dedication)**
Before things even got off the ground, I had to 'bow out' because At the time I was working 40 hours at my very first job, and 20 hours of school every week. I was exhausted, and at that time, I was the only one on the team who could look at BYOND code and tell you what it was going to do in-game. Eventually, this Skyre/Skure reborn team fell apart. The game went into the back-burner for nearly a year. Mahn continued to host v4.
Sometime after a year was up, we almost lost FF:THG for good. Someone logged into Mahn's server and declared Dagolar would be handing the game over to him. Mahn insisted this did not happen. He emailed Dagolar right away and begged to have ownership instead of 'Lance'-who had already appointed GM's...
Yup. Begged. Pause and read it again if you need to.
It worked. Dagolar entrusted FF:THG's fate to Mahn, who had by now recruited Shoobs who had already been working on the old v4 code. Kija and Dever were also part of the initial 'rebirth' time for FF:THG. Very shortly after, their new team was complete. Faru and Tatertotz joined in at this time, too. After some initial work, Tatz left the BH.
Hail! v5 was born. The first time the game had been updated in nearly 2 years. Hiroshima joined the team around v5. There was much rejoicing. Thorg and Pogrus returned to congratulate the team on a job well done.
Reap was inducted to the BH after v6 was freshly released. Mettool came back and was voted to take the place of host for v6.
Lead up to the current time frame, Reap and Mettool have retired.
Faru has gratefully updated his website a few times still to keep up with the game in its current version. He has also just recently resigned from BH status.
The current BH team (in no specific order)consists of Kija, Mahn, Constantine, Hiroshima, Rand, Kain, and Tral. Honorable mentions go to Stryfe for his short but sweet? additions to the team.
***Amazing facts of dedication to remember***
1.) The original v4 code was created mostly by Loud. He created the battle system, anyways. He left shortly after it was completed to finish his own project, FFL. Yup, FFL was created after FF:THG, debunking the myth that FF:THG is a rip of FFL.
2.) The original code was 3,200 lines of code. It was all in one single DM file. It was in no way, shape, or form organized in any manner. It was in a situation where all game components were tied together. Take out one component and the whole thing became inoperable. Kija and the rest of the team took painstaking hours of testing to see what each piece of code did..then fixed it. Eventually, a brand new source code was the result. It is completely bug free, and nearly impossible to cheat in any way. Very very solid programming. This is definitely something that only a handful of BYOND games can boast. I personally, only know of 4 BYOND games to be so perfectly programmed that it produces minimal CPU and bandwidth lag.
3.) Mahn rescued the game from someone , and technically the game is his. He loved the game so much, he banned 1,000 men in a single click. And 1 woman. At least, I think thats the going girl/boy ratio on BYOND.
And incase you are wondering about how our current storyline in Skure came about...here's a storyline originally created by Dagolar.
